Buy Limit
A pending order to buy placed below the current market price, filled at that price or better.
What Buy Limit means
A buy limit rests below the prevailing market and is filled only if the ask falls to the specified level or lower. Because it is a limit order it can never be filled at a worse price than requested, though in a fast decline it can be filled at a better one. Traders use it to buy a pullback into support, a moving average, a Fibonacci retracement zone or a prior demand area, on the view that price will dip and then resume higher.
The distinction from a sell stop, which sits at a similar place on the chart, is the direction of the expected move. Both are below the market, but a buy limit assumes the level holds while a sell stop assumes it breaks. Placing the wrong one is a common beginner error and produces a position facing exactly the opposite way to the intended trade.
The characteristic risk is adverse selection. A buy limit only fills when sellers are pushing the market down through the level, so the order is by construction filled by the party who is more motivated at that moment. Left resting through a data release or overnight, it can be filled at the start of a sustained decline. Pairing the entry with a predefined stop loss, ideally attached automatically on fill, is the standard mitigation.
Worked example
With EUR/USD trading at 1.0850 and support around 1.0800, a trader places a buy limit at 1.0805; the order fills only if the ask trades down to 1.0805 or lower, and is ignored if the market rallies.

Trade with a regulated broker
Understanding the terminology is the cheap part. The expensive part is choosing a counterparty whose execution, financing and withdrawal behaviour match what the marketing implies. Every broker below has been reviewed with a funded live account, and each review states which legal entity and which regulator applies to the account you would actually open.
Check the licence on the regulator's own register before you deposit — our regulators directory explains what each authority enforces, from leverage caps to compensation limits.
