About EUR/USD

EUR/USD is the most heavily traded currency pair in the world, routinely accounting for around a quarter of all spot foreign-exchange turnover. Its depth means the tightest spreads on any broker's book and slippage that stays minimal even during data releases.

The pair takes its direction from the interest-rate gap between the European Central Bank and the Federal Reserve. Euro-area PMIs, US non-farm payrolls and CPI prints are the scheduled events that move it most, with the London-New York overlap producing the bulk of the daily range.

EUR/USD sits in the majors group on our board. A standard contract is 100,000 units of EUR, which puts the value of a single pip at $10.00. A full-lot position moves through a meaningful amount of account equity in an ordinary session, so size the trade against the instrument’s daily range rather than against the margin requirement.

EUR/USD FAQ

Where does the EUR/USD price on this page come from?

The EUR/USD figure is the European Central Bank's daily euro reference rate — one fixing per working day, shown with its reference date. It is a reference mid-rate, not a bid or ask you can deal on, and a fixing more than four days old is withheld rather than shown as current. It is for information only — use your broker's own prices before placing any trade.

What is a typical EUR/USD spread?

Spreads are set by each broker and vary by account type and time of day: they are tightest during the London and New York sessions and widen sharply around major data releases and in the thin hours after the New York close. Compare the live spread on each broker's own platform before you trade.

How much is one pip worth on EUR/USD?

On a standard contract of 100,000 units of EUR, one pip is worth $10.00, because EUR/USD is quoted in US dollars. Scale that down proportionally for mini and micro lots — a 0.01 lot position moves at one hundredth of that figure.

When can I trade EUR/USD?

Sun 22:00 – Fri 22:00 GMT (continuous). Liquidity is not evenly distributed across those hours: expect the tightest spreads and the largest ranges when the primary session for this instrument overlaps with London or New York.

What does the overnight swap cost on EUR/USD?

Swap rates are set by each broker and change with policy rates, so we do not publish a figure. Most brokers apply a triple charge on Wednesdays to cover the weekend; positive rates are credited and negative rates are debited. Check the contract specification on your broker's platform.
