SEC Launches Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced the establishment of a new specialized unit within its Division of Enforcement, to be led by Timothy Zimmerman, according to a press release issued from Washington D.C. on Aug. 5, 2026.

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced it is establishing a new specialized unit within the Division of Enforcement. The announcement was made in a press release from Washington D.C., dated Aug. 5, 2026, identified as release number 2026-72.

Zimmerman to Lead the New Unit

Timothy Zimmerman will lead the Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit. Zimmerman joined the SEC in May 2026, taking on the role of senior advisor to the Director. Before joining the agency, his most recent prior role was Deputy General Counsel at an international accounting and professional services firm. Earlier in his career, Zimmerman worked for 12 years at an international law firm.

Unit Structure and Scope

The Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit will be staffed by both attorneys and accountants with specialized skills related to financial reporting, accounting, and auditing in securities regulation. The unit will work in close collaboration with staff across all relevant SEC divisions and offices.
