The European Securities and Markets Authority published two additional thematic notes on sustainability-related claims.

One note covers positive impact claims made through funds and bonds. The other focuses on climate transition claims across funds, bonds and benchmarks.
ESMA said the notes offer practical do’s and don’ts for sustainability claims in non-regulatory communications, with examples of good and poor practices based on observed market practice.
The authority said the notes are intended to help communications remain clear, fair and not misleading, and to reduce the risk of greenwashing.
Respondents
The notes refer to market participants making sustainability-related claims through funds, bonds and benchmarks.
Effective
ESMA said the notes do not create new regulatory requirements.
It said they should not be read as prescribing a particular approach or level of ambition, including in the context of the ongoing review of the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation.
The authority said the notes are part of a wider series aimed at promoting greater transparency and consistency in sustainability-related disclosures.
It said they follow previous thematic notes on ESG credentials and ESG strategies.
