  • ESMA opened a Call for Evidence on tokenised collateral used by central counterparties.
  • Stakeholders can submit contributions by 15 January 2027.
  • ESMA will assess feedback in the first quarter of 2027.

Action

The European Securities and Markets Authority has launched a Call for Evidence on the potential use of tokenised collateral by central counterparties. It is seeking evidence on whether EU CCPs could use tokenised forms of collateral safely and effectively, and under what conditions.

The call focuses on how tokenisation may affect the transfer, management, protection and use of collateral across its lifecycle.

Respondents

ESMA is inviting all interested stakeholders to submit contributions. It will publish responses after the consultation closes unless respondents request otherwise.

Effective

Contributions are due by 15 January 2027. ESMA said it will assess the feedback in the first quarter of 2027.

The regulator said that, based on that assessment and its wider work on tokenisation in financial markets, it will determine the most appropriate course of action, including any regulatory or supervisory convergence action within its remit.
